Which Card Suits You?

Shopping around for the best credit card deal is obviously important and comparing APRs is usually the clearest indicator of which card offers the greatest value. This is especially true if you spread your payments over a period of months, but if repay your credit card in full each month, you have other features to consider. More...

If you are thinking of applying for a credit card, you should be asking yourself how you manage your repayments, ie do you repay in full or over a period of time?

1) Repay credit card balance in full

If you have habitually paid the balance on your credit card on time and in full, then you should be comparing credit cards in terms of reward schemes. An interest rate is of lesser importance to people who do not carry over a balance; therefore make your judgments based on incentives. With rewards in mind, see which credit card companies offer air miles, vacation discounts or cheaper insurance deals, for example.

2) Spread repayments

If you like to spread you repayments into affordable installments then you should be considering applying for a credit card with low interest. If you can transfer your balance onto a credit card with a more favorable APR you will be able to repay your balance sooner rather than later.

Getting the most out of your credit card may mean changing your credit card company, but why not request a better rate from your present card provider first? If you have never missed a payment and have held the card for over a year, your provider may be happy to lower your APR rather than lose you as a customer.
